Boom Or Bust For Freelance Graphic Designers

I recently saw a posting for a new logo design to be done by some graphic designers by a pretty big and reputable company. The interesting twist to this posting that I saw for a new company graphic logo was that the posting was at a graphic designer community based website called crowdSpring. The idea behind this site is to give a forum where businesses and creatives from around the globe and come together to work and exchange creative graphical ideas. The site is striving to be a beacon for all those aspiring web designers or graphical artist that may not have the opportunity or finances to be a fully funded and running web design studio.

I came upon this site purely by accident really and I had no idea there was this type of platform for graphical designers to get some work. Kind of like a service for freelance writers to find work only they are focused on bringing attention to graphic designers. In my exploration of this site I came to find that there seems to be two distinct sides to the positives and negative of this freelance graphic artist site.

On the one had there is the argument that by giving corporations and businesses a place where they can cheaply put an order out to have a new logo designed for them is undercutting those that work in the graphic design business. High priced graphic design and web design shops depend on these business opportunities to keep their own jobs. So when they see potential grapic design jobs being posted for much lower prices that what they charge and being given to potentially every mom, pop and fifteen year old kid with a graphics program on their home computer a chance to get that job. That to me would be a little frustrating to see that there is a new game in town that is taking away graphic design job opportunities from my own shop.

Now of course there is the other side of graphic designer coin that not all great graphical designers necessarily work as a web designer or graphic designer. Giving businesses the opportunity to work with potentially millions of people from all over the world and seeing what they have to bring to the table in terms of the design of a logo or some other graphical element is what working with the free market is all about. Giving people who just like freelance writers have the skill of writing and we all know how many opportunities there are on the internet for freelance writers. A forum or job site if you will for freelance graphic designers would only seem like the most logical step in the evolution of web design and graphic design.

Just like so many businesses out there the internet is forcing the world of web design and graphic design to change and adapt to a whole new way of doing business. Like it or not I would say that old concept of working for a creative workshop of graphics is probably going to be left to the very elite of graphic designers. I think open freelance forums like this site will most likely be the end of the little two or three person graphic design shops and the beginning of the boom for freelance graphic designers.
